Gaming

For 2005, non-computer gaming will move to DaVinci's, a much larger space which will be dedicated to gaming around the clock all weekend. Scroll down and behold the more than ninety game events!

Board Gamers / Card Gamers / Miniatures Gamers - We encourage you to bring your games with you to Penguicon, and participate in Open Gaming. We expect there to be many Gamers at the con, of all experience levels, and we're sure that you will be able to meet many people "looking for game." Come and spread your favorites around!

Computer Gamers - We will have a much more formal computer gaming presence in the Computer Lounge in 2005 than we have had before. We will provide more than sufficient computing power to host just about any number of players, limited only by the networking lash-up we can string together-- and even that is growing daily. So *everyone* should bring their computer/laptop (and CAT5 cable) and plan to play computer games! At this point, we can not accomodate wireless access to the games network, only wired. We will have formal security for labeling and guarding your hardware in the Computer Lounge. Confirmed is "Counterstrike", with others likely: "Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory", "Counterstrike Source", and "Nethack". Others are possible, with research continuing on "FreeCiv II" and other abandonware. If you plan to play Valve games, Valve requires that you must have a Steam account.

Would you like to play a game? If you would be interested in running a scheduled computer game at next year's Penguicon, then please e-mail our Head of Gaming at [email protected] with details. We're always looking for more gamesmasters.

Corrections to the program book are marked in red.

Imagine that you’re a supercomputer. Now imagine that you’re bored. So you dream up a little contest for you and a couple of your supercomputing buddies. Your task is to move one of the stupid little robots out on the factory floor through a series of checkpoints scattered throughout the factory. The wrinkle, however, is that the factory floor is filled with all kinds of inconvenient (if not down-right deadly) obstacles located in various locations: conveyor belts, crushers, flame-throwers, pushers, teleporters, oil slicks, pits, et cetera. But the real fun comes when the robots cross each other’s paths, and suddenly your perfect route is something less than that... For this basic Robo Rally event, a small board will be used to maximize player interaction.

Sat 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Emergo

GM: Matt Arnold
2 players
Emergo is for elimination games what Go is for territory games. This is the perfect realization of a 3D mechanism of movement and capture called 'column checkers': players control stacks of checkers when their piece is on top. So wide that most strategy games could drown in it in terms of the number of possible positions, its strategy is elegantly simple: "Feed, decapitate, bury." Yet it allows for great diversity in style and many levels of sophistication. The tactics are fabulous, both in the variety and depth. Unlike chess, there is no danger of exhaustion of the study of its stunning combinatorial whirlpools any century soon. See https://www.mindsports.net/Arena/Emergo/AboutEmergo.html

Sat 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Aquarius

GM: Lisa Padala
2 to 5 players

Modern Art

GM: University of Catan Faculty
3 to 5 players
Buy your way to fame & fortune with Modern Art, the high stakes gallery auction game. Players compete to gain the most money by buying and selling paintings at auctions and reselling them for profit. All players take turns running the auctions, which come in many different styles. Whoever offers the top bid owns the painting and sells it at the end of the round. The price the painting fetches is based on the popularity of the artist and how well his paintings have sold in the past. The player with the most money at the end of four rounds of buying and selling wins.

Players combine and recombine settings, characters, problems and resolutions to create the best story they can, while other players mix things up with wacky action cards. As card games go, this one is quite revolutionary. Perhaps its oddest feature is that you cannot rearrange your hand, as you need to play the cards in the order that you draw them. To help players match their cards up, the game features extensive trading and deal making.

Fluxx: the card game with ever changing rules! It starts out simple, draw one card and play one card. But New Rule cards quickly make things chaotic, and even the object of the game will often change as you play.

Mystery of the Abbey

GM: Josh Drobina

Aquarius

GM: Shaun Klein
2 to 5 players
This card game is dazzlingly colorful, fun to play, and easy to learn. Each player tries to be the first to connect seven panels of a particular element (earth, air, fire, water or ether). Each player starts with a different goal, but action cards allow players to trade or scramble the goals, as well as changing the cards on the table, thus keeping the game exciting right up to the end.

Sun 3:00 am - 4:00 am
Zendo

GM: Josh Drobina & Shaun Klein
3 to 6 players
Can you guess the master’s riddle? What is the secret of the Buddha nature? One of today’s most popular Icehouse games is now available as a complete boxed set! One player acts as the master, guiding the other players (students) as they seek to unravel the secret rule by building little structures (called koans) out of Icehouse pyramids.

Sun 5:00 am - 7:00 am
Bootleggers

GM: Clark Rodeffer
3 to 6 players
It’s January, 1921. Prohibition has been in effect for a year, and it looks like the 18th Amendment is here to stay. The problem is, outlawing the “manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors” hasn’t done anything to reduce the demand for booze! As a result, illegal stills dot the countryside and secret (or not-so-secret!) speakeasies are popping up all over in cities large and small. Local law enforcement may look the other way (especially if they’re properly motivated), but Elliot Ness’ G-Men are harder to convince. With this much money at stake, organized crime is sure to take an interest.

Sun 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
Dork Tower

GM: Walter Schirmacher
3 to 6 players
Play John Kovalic’s Dork Tower characters...as they play their characters...in a magical quest for the ultimate prize where no strategy is too low, no player too Munchkinly, and no rule is safe! Adventure through the land of Aurora, smiting monsters and growing in power, until you are strong enough to challenge the evil wizard in his tower. Slay him and you win...fail, and be cast from the heights. Steve Jackson Games MIB event.

Prototype Track: & the Horse You Rode In On
GM: David Whitcher

Within the dark cold depths of the sea lies a world that could have risen from the works of Jules Verne. Here beneath the silt and sand of the sea floor resides the resting place of an ancient civilization once the marvel of the world. Now, groups of researchers have come together to build a fantastic underwater city, made from the many components sunk on the ocean floor.
